About Us...
How I became hooked on standard poodles... let me preface this by saying that I have always been a dog addict. My mother used to tell me how our dog would sit near me when I was a baby and howl when I cried and that I have always been part dog... which is a compliment in my mind!
I initially intended to become a veterinarian but changed to nursing so that I could serve in the US Naval Nurse Corps. My love of dogs was still there and I decided all those years ago that I would breed dogs someday.
I have had -numerous dogs in my life time and have bred both pugs and basset hounds briefly in past. Although I love both breeds, I did not find my perfect fit until I found the standard poodle.
My first introduction was quite by chance. I was picking up a schnauzer puppy for aunt... drove 3 hours west of my house in southeastern VA with plans to then to meet my aunt 1/2 way to NJ the next day for puppy delivery...yes, I know we are a bit crazy. At any rate, when I arrived at the farm to pick up the schnauzer puppy, I was greeted by this wonderful black dog with long almost dreadlocked hair. I recognized him as a standard poodle and asked the breeder about him. She invited me to see the standard poodle puppies she had. I returned the next weekend for my Remington and the rest is history.
After about a year of sharing my life with my wonderful Remington, I knew this was the direction I wanted to go and started looking for females. I put myself on a waiting list with one breeder and in the meantime, the original breeder I went to let me know she had a cream girl available...so I bought both, of course, and added Prudence and Eliza to our family. Just over a year later, my beautiful Hope came to live with us... just because I needed her.
These dogs amaze me daily. Each one is very much an individual and has added so much to my life. Never have I met a breed that bonds to it's human as much as the standard poodle. They are truly my fur-babies and I can not imagine my life without them.
My goal as a breeder is to breed healthy puppies with great personalities. I choose my dogs not just for their looks/colors but for the sweetness/gentleness they display. We are with the puppies from the day they are born until the day they go to their new homes. It is quite the norm to find my daughter sitting in the whelping box for hours on end and I will admit that more than one patient note (I am now a Nurse Practitioner) has been completed from the box with puppies and mama laying on my lap. They are family. We feel that by keeping our breeding program on the smaller side, each puppy can have personalized attention and thus will be well adjusted and make wonderful additions to any family.
